The 1991 Italian champions relished their first and only appearance in Europe’s primary competition and advanced all the way to its Wembley final.

Their brilliant attacking trident of Vialli, Mancini and Lombardo were all in top goalscoring form as the Genovese side reached the group stages with victories over Rosenborg and Honved. There Samp went head to head with holders Red Star Belgrade and a 3-1 away win in the final group fixture took them into the final and a date with Cruyff’s Barcelona.

A tight game with few chances went all the way to extra time and a Ronald Koeman free-kick won the trophy for the catalans.
